Mission

The Toussaint Louverture Historical Society is dedicated to the preservation and dissemination of reliable information on the life and achievements of General Toussaint Louverture, the pioneer of the Haitian Revolution.

The Society, a not-for-profit organization incorporated in the District of Columbia in 2001, was founded by a group of concerned Haitians and friends of Haiti in the world. The Society accomplishes its mission by conducting public and educational programs, publishing books and other materials, supporting historical research, and collecting antiques and artifacts related to Toussaint Louverture and his descendants. These activities and others increase the public’s awareness of Toussaint’s contributions to Haiti and the world. Public Programs

Each year, the Society presents a series of lectures by distinguished scholars focusing on a particular period of Toussaint’s life and his achievements. Series topics have included “General Toussaint Louverture, Man of the Millennium” a review of his life and achievements as reported by Richard Gillespie author of “Papa Toussaint, “ Madison Smartt Bell, author of Master of the Crossroads, Milton B. Beckerman journalist and researcher on Toussaint’s Life, Lionel Legros History professor and descendant of Toussaint and Max Beauvoir Indigenous Religious expert and Historian. These lectures are open to the public as well as to members of the Society. The Society is a cosponsor of the Haitian National Heritage Lecture, an annual event that the society hosts on a rotating basis with other Haitian organizations worldwide.

The Society conducts an acquisitions program, working closely with other Historical Societies. The Society is in the process of constructing a permanent collection of busts and portraits, as well as period paintings, private papers, and other artifacts relating to Toussaint Louverture life and achievements. Many of these objects will be incorporated into displays prepared by the Society’s during its annual lectures for the benefit of the many participants and visitors.

Education

The society is developing reading materials kit for young adults of Haitian ancestry and non-Haitians interested in Haitian cultural heritage. The Society organizes mini-lectures in collaboration with other Haitian Cultural and Historical organizations to increase the level of public awareness of the rich history of Haiti.
