The Toussaint
Louverture Historical Society is
dedicated to the preservation and
dissemination of reliable
information on the life and
achievements of General Toussaint
Louverture, the pioneer of the
Haitian Revolution. The Society, a
not-for-profit organization
incorporated in the District of
Columbia in 2001, was founded by a
group of concerned Haitians and
friends of Haiti in the world. The
Society accomplishes its mission by
conducting public and educational
programs, publishing books and other
materials, supporting historical
research, and collecting antiques
and artifacts related to Toussaint
Louverture and his descendants.
These activities and others increase
the publics awareness of
Toussaints contributions to Haiti
and the world.

Each year, the Society presents
a series of lectures by

Heritage Lecture, an annual event
that the society hosts on a rotating

conducts an acquisitions program,
working closely with other
Historical Societies. The Society is
in the process of constructing a
permanent collection of busts and
portraits, as well as period

artifacts relating to Toussaint
Louverture life and achievements.
Many of these objects will be
incorporated into displays prepared
by the Societys during its annual
lectures for the benefit of the many
participants and visitors.
Education
The society is developing reading
materials kit for young adults of
Haitian ancestry and non-Haitians
interested in Haitian cultural
heritage. The Society organizes
mini-lectures in collaboration with
other Haitian Cultural and
Historical organizations to increase
the level of public awareness of the
rich history of Haiti.
Organization
At present, Society members are of every age, background, and nationality. They provide financial support and volunteer for service on the Society standing and ad hoc committees. These committees report to an elected Board of Directors; the Executive Committee of the Board is principally responsible for policy decisions. In addition, the Society is proud to collaborate with many other organizations or institutions of higher learning in such matter as lecture series, cultural events, documentation and dissemination of historical information.
The Society' Board of Directors provides overall guidance and leadership. Virtually all Society activities are conducted through panels composed of Society Advisors and others with expertise in the area of examination. In addition, the Society has three committees, which provide input to the Society's study agenda and serve as collegial forums for members to exchange ideas and information and interact with experts outside the Society.
The Society Advisors provide unparalleled insight and experience. Collectively, they are the Society's primary vehicles for addressing emerging issues and contributing to the intellectual and popular discourse on Haitian history.
