First European ship with African slaves reaches Hispaniola around 1510. By 1810, almost one million African slaves imported to Hispaniola - the largest number in any Caribbean island.
During the 1700s, the Caribbean islands produce as much as 80 to 90% of the sugar used in western Europe.
By the mid-1700s, Haiti is the chief sugar supplier for France. By the mid-1700s, Haiti is also exporting large quantities of coffee, cocoa, and indgo to Europe.
